CDM Expertise
Callsafe Services Ltd. is an occupational health and safety consultancy which was formed in 1986 and has been deeply involved with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations since the original recommendations of the Health and Safety Executive in 1989.
Having such an early involvement in the issues arising out of the regulations, and with our particularly high profile in the training and consultancy fields, we received a number of commissions long before the regulations came into force. This allowed us to work very closely with the Health and Safety Executive in order that they could learn with us as we became familiar with the role. This involvement had the additional advantage of ensuring that the HSE were satisfied with our approach to fulfilling the duties of a planning supervisor at a very early stage.
To date, our commissions include:
Development of Procedures
Development of CDM procedures for McDonald's Restaurants and the setting up of their internal planning supervision. We have a continuing brief to provide technical support to their planning supervisors and project managers.
Development of CDM procedures for West Midlands Health Authority and the ongoing training of NHS estates and facilities officers together with their network of consultants.
Development of CDM procedures for Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council and the ongoing training of their engineering and architectural staff. Additionally, developing CDM Procedures and providing training to their Department of Housing.
Development of CDM procedures for Benoy Ltd and the ongoing training of their architectural staff. Benoy were the architects on such projects as Blue Water, probably the biggest building project in the UK, and the Bull Ring redevelopment in Birmingham.
CDM Procedures and training have also been delivered to other employers such as:-
- Royal Engineers
- Seeboard plc (now EDF Energy)
- Staffordshire County Council
- Bowmer Kirkland
- States of Jersey
- Environment Agency
- JMP Consulting
- Transport for London
- United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority
Assistance in the development of CDM procedures to such organisations as Yorkshire Building Society, Nationwide Building Society, Central Regional Council, BNFL and British Aerospace.
Support to the Planning Supervisor
Providing professional health and safety support to consultants who do not have that expertise. Such Contracts include the refurbishment of a substantial property in London's West End, pedestrianisation of part of a town centre, concrete repairs to an office block and the building of a substantial extension to a nursing home in Hull. In all but one of the foregoing, we conducted the vast majority of the planning supervision work.
Although the Planning Supervisor on the Bull Ring Centre was Benoy, Callsafe Services carried out all of the planning supervision up to the award of the Design & Build Contract for the Centre. The project was valued at approximately £500,000,000.
Commissioned by National House Building Council, reporting to their newly appointed Planning Supervision Manager, we have set up and ran their planning supervisor service. Having trained a number of staff, Callsafe supported them until they became self-sufficient.
When requested, Callsafe Services provides support in the form of consultants to work as Planning Supervisor on a range of projects undertaken by a major Civil Engineering Consultant.
